Our Concepts

Changes, responsibility, environment

Things for you to know about the Year 3 this term:

English focus: Our English learning will begin by revisiting basic punctuation and sentence structure, helping children to build confidence in writing clear, well-formed sentences. Using Matilda as our book focus, we will then explore character and setting descriptions, developing vocabulary and sentence choices to make our writing engaging and imaginative.

Children will learn to use verbs, adverbs and adjectives effectively to add detail, atmosphere and interest to their descriptive writing, while continuing to develop their understanding of punctuation and sentence construction.

Math focus: In Maths, the children will develop their understanding of number and place value by partitioning numbers, identifying odd and even numbers, and ordering numbers. We will also explore multiplication and division through grouping, using practical activities and representations to help children develop a secure understanding of these concepts.

Each week, the children will have a dedicated reasoning session, where they will develop different mathematical techniques and apply their knowledge to solve problems and explain their thinking.

Every Friday, we will enjoy a Wider Maths focus, exploring symmetry and parallel and perpendicular lines through practical and engaging activities.

Topic: Our topic this term is ‘Marvellous Materials’, and we are sure the children will love exploring the fascinating world of materials and discovering how they are used in our everyday lives. Throughout the topic, we will develop an understanding of recycling and sustainability, exploring why recycling is so important and considering the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans and wider environment.

During Autumn 1 our focus will be on materials and their properties. The children will investigate different types of materials and take part in a scientific experiment to discover which material makes the best insulator. They will develop their skills in predicting, observing, measuring and recording their findings.

In Autumn 2, we will turn our attention to recycling and environmental responsibility. The children will explore what happens when waste is not recycled correctly and investigate how pollution can harm our planet, wildlife and oceans. They will consider ways in which we can all make more sustainable choices and become responsible citizens.

The topic will provide opportunities to develop learning across a range of Areas of Learning and Experience (AOLEs). These will include Science and Technology, Expressive Arts, where children will create artwork using recycled and everyday materials, Numeracy, through interpreting and creating graphs, and Languages, Literacy and Communication, where they will plan and create their own engaging television advert promoting recycling.

Welsh: This term, our Welsh learning will focus on ‘Dyma Fi’ (This is Me). The children will develop their confidence in using Welsh sentence structures to talk and write about themselves, including their name, age, likes and dislikes, and family.

Through a range of fun and engaging activities, the children will build their vocabulary and develop their understanding of simple Welsh sentence patterns. By the end of the term, our aim is for the children to be able to independently write a short paragraph about themselves in Welsh, using the language they have learned throughout the term.

Helpwr heddiw takes place in the morning (10 minutes) For 20 minutes everyday (end of the day) , the children will be taking part in Welsh games focusing on a phrase a fortnight. 

Health and Well-being: The health, wellbeing and happiness of our children is at the heart of everything we do. We want every child to feel happy, safe, valued and confident when they come to school, creating a positive environment where they can thrive both personally and academically.

In our weekly PE sessions, the children will develop their physical skills, with a particular focus on footwork, coordination and balance. As the term progresses, PE will develop into two sessions each week, including one indoor and one outdoor session, providing opportunities for children to further develop their physical confidence and teamwork skills.

Our wellbeing sessions will focus on ‘Being Me in My World’. Through a range of activities and discussions, the children will explore their dreams, goals, achievements and things they can be proud of, while developing self-awareness, confidence and a positive sense of belonging.
