At Cyfarthfa Park Primary we follow the Inspire Maths approach to teaching Mathematics. The scheme of work was introduced in 2017 and begins in Year 1. Each year group works through a progressive, spiral curriculum which emphasises mastery and deep conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts.

‘Inspire Maths’ is built on the proven approach to teaching mathematics in Singapore, and is recognised globally as one of the most impactful ways to teach and learn maths.
The scheme follows a concrete – pictorial – abstract approach which ensures deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Children are encouraged to explore concepts using apparatus, developing an understanding of how this relates to pictorial representations and the abstract form.
The carefully-designed spiral progression in the programme builds up knowledge over time, enabling all children to become confident mathematicians. This means mathematical concepts are revisited and built upon over the course of the academic year and indeed throughout Primary School.
The Guided Practice promotes discussion and exploration, with a strong emphasis on mathematical language and the use of concrete apparatus.
Reasoning, questioning, noticing patterns and making links are key to Inspire Maths.
The Pupil Textbooks introduce concepts in a highly scaffolded way, helping children to make meaningful connections between mathematical ideas.
The Practice Books reinforce the concepts that have been introduced and encourage extensive opportunities for independent practice. This builds fluency through frequent and varied practice leading towards mastery of concepts.
Questioning is key in deepening conceptual understanding and identifying misconceptions.
Here are some example you could use at home....
How do you know?
What do you know?
What do you notice?
What if......?
Can you show me that in another way?
What is the same? What is different?
Concrete apparatus or resources (also referred to as manipulatives) are objects or physical resources that children can handle and manipulate to aid their understanding of different maths concepts.
We use a range of resources including ...
Dienes - wooden or plastic blocks that represent ones, tens, hundreds, thousands.
Cuisenaire - coloured rods that can be used to explore a wide range of concepts.
Counters to represent thousands, hundreds tens and ones.
As well as Digital Manipulatives - click on the link to take you to Mathsbot.
