In Nursery and Reception children are introduced to Numicon. This forms the basis for exploration and understanding of Number in the Early Years. Alongside this pupils have a wide range of experiences using practical resources, singing songs and chanting rhymes inside and outside of the classroom as well as opportunities to investigate connections in Mathematics and Numeracy during independent learning. Exciting, meaningful, practical experiences are key!
So, what is Numicon?
Numicon is an approach to teaching maths that helps children understand number and make connections. It is a multi-sensory way of learning, which means children learn by seeing and feeling.
The colourful Numicon Shapes are an important part of Numicon and help develop children's understanding of number. The holes in the shapes represent the numbers 1 to 10. When they are arranged in order, as in the picture below, children can easily see connections between numbers, such as ‘one more’ or ‘one less’.
There are lots of ways you can help your child in Mathematics and Numeracy at home. Exploring number, shape and measure with your child in fun and practical ways is ideal. You can sing songs and chant rhymes, count and blocks, cubes, shells or pebbles, count and order toys. Have some fun! Of course should you wish to explore Numicon at home you can download the Oxford Owl free Numicon activity sheets, watch the Numicon videos, or browse the selection of Numicon kits for parents to find inspiration.
